Whilst I felt that von Trier went a bit overboard on the gore, it is of course a matter of opinion, and is why the film has split critics down the middle. The juxtaposition of the beautiful mise-en-scéne and dark, disturbing story was also superb, and only contributed to the mixture of feelings the audience feels watching it.įor my first von Trier experience, Antichrist certainly didn’t disappoint. (Jump cuts were of course made famous in the French Nouvelle Vague of the 1960s, especially in A Bout de Souffle by Jean-Luc Godard, one of my favourite films of all time). The Cannes prize winner was targeted by a Catholic pressure group, Promouvoir, who argued in court, successfully, that the film needed to be reclassified to stop under-16s from seeing it. The use of jump cuts was inspired, making the audience nervy and on edge, and almost as though they were sitting in the room with ‘He’ and ‘She’. Lars von Trier’s magnificently mad Antichrist was banned in France seven years after its release (in 2009). The fact that ‘He’ (Willem Dafoe’s character) is a psychologist also helps.Īs well, I felt the cinematography was first rate. Not only does it document a couple’s relationship struggle after the tragic death of their son, but it closely examines the psychology of those experiencing grief. It is well documented that he had depression in the two years leading up to the filming of Antichrist, and this is perfectly clear throughout the film. Having said that, I feel sure that von Trier did not want Antichrist to be like a Hollywood narrative, considering how symbolism is a huge part of it – he wants his audience to think, and should be applauded for that. I felt that he became so engrossed in making the gore realistic and ‘in-your-face’ that he forgot about his story. Whilst the premise of the narrative is quite original and draws your interest, as the film moves on, you almost lose sight of it as your mind is so shocked at the violent porn being put on show it makes you feel uncomfortable, perhaps disgusted, and as though von Trier has a disdain for his audience. For example, use the infamous shower scene in Psycho – if von Trier had filmed this, there is no doubt in my mind that you would probably see Marion Crane explicitly ripped from throat to vagina and dumped in the bath tub.Īnd this leads me to my problem with Antichrist. I have to admit, apart from a very brief knowledge of the Dogme 95 cinematic revolution, I am not particularly aware of von Trier’s work, though I knew that he had a penchant for being gruesome and shocking.Īntichrist, then, certainly succeeded in showing von Trier still uses gore as a key part of his films, as from almost beginning to end, you cannot go more than a few minutes before you have someone inflicting, or self-inflicting, pain, and von Trier certainly does not hold back in showing his audience exactly what happens, whether you want to see it or not it is as though von Trier takes Hitchock’s love of voyeurism and elevates it to a whole new level. As you might have guessed by this blog entry’s title, I saw Antichrist by Lars von Trier last night.
